There's a version of summer that looks like this: sleep in, scroll through social media, work a part-time job, hang out with the same people in the same places.
For a lot of students, that's summer. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with a restful like that!
BUT... there's another version, pastor, that's harder, less comfortable, more demanding and exponentially more formative and transformative, getting them to join you on a mission trip.
We've led over 60 mission trips over the last 25 years. In the local church, through other ministries and now at Enhance Ministries. And if there's one thing we've learned across all of them, it's this: the week a student spends on a mission trip can be one of the most significant weeks of not only their summer, but their entire spiritual life to that point. How can this be? Because mission trips create conditions for transformation that almost nothing else can replicate. Not small groups, not large group worship, teaching or game time. Not anything else the routine of a youth ministry year holds, short-term missions is it's own unique, transformational tool God uses in students' lives!
Here's what we mean.
It Creates the Conditions for Real Faith
Most students in American churches grow up with a faith that is largely inherited, passed down from parents, absorbed from a church culture, shaped by a weekly routine of attending and participating. That's not a bad thing. But inherited faith, untested, has a fragile quality to it.
A mission trip tests it.
When a student is sitting across from someone in genuine need, someone whose life looks nothing like theirs, whose circumstances they can't explain away, whose dignity demands a response, the Sunday school answers run out quickly. The familiar religious language starts to feel too small for what they're experiencing.
And in the midst of that tension, something has to be real or it ends up being nothing.
Students who discover real Gospel driven faith in that moment don't forget it. The faith that sees and survives contact with actual human need is a faith that tends to last.
Barna Research has consistently documented this: students who participate in meaningful mission experiences are significantly more likely to maintain an active faith into adulthood than those who don't. The data tracks what we've seen in person for a quarter century! A week on a mission trip isn't a supplement to a student's spiritual formation. For many of them, it's the hinge point.
"Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." Hebrews 11:1 (NIV)
Faith, by definition, requires a context where its reality is not obvious. A mission trip provides that context in a way that a youth room rarely can.
It Breaks the Bubble
Most students spend the majority of their lives in a remarkably narrow world. The same school, the same neighborhood, the same social circles, the same algorithm-curated version of reality on their phones. Even students who are curious and thoughtful are largely shaped by an environment that reflects back what they already know.
A mission trip, especially an urban one, ruptures that bubble in the best possible way.
They see a world larger than themselves. They encounter people whose lives look nothing like theirs, not as statistics or news stories, but as real human beings with names and stories and dignity. And in that encounter, something happens: they begin to see through the eyes of a God who loves every single one of those people just as fiercely as He loves them.
That shift in perspective is not subtle. Youth pastors consistently tell us it's visible in students from the moment they get out of the van. The way they talk, the things they notice, the questions they ask. All of it reflects an expanded vision of the world and of God's heart for it.
That expansion, once it happens, is hard to undo. And that's exactly the point!
You see, it's only outside the boundaries of comfort that we truly see God move in transformational ways through and in students' (and their leaders') lives!
It Builds the Kind of Community That Lasts
There is something about shared hardship that creates community faster than almost anything else.
Students who serve together, struggle together, pray with and for one another as they're serving, and who worship together during mission trips form bonds that outlast that week. The social hierarchies that govern school hallways on who's popular, who's not, who says the right things and who doesn't tend to dissolve within the context of a mission team.
What's left is something more honest. More real. More like the kind of community the Church is actually supposed to be.
Youth pastors consistently tell us that their group's dynamic shifts permanently after a trip. Students who barely knew each other become close. Students who were on the margins of the youth group find a place of belonging. The whole group develops a shared story. a reference point that pulls them together for years.
"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." Galatians 6:2 (NIV)
Mission trips create the conditions where that verse stops being an exhortation and starts being a lived experience. And once students have lived it, they know what to reach for relationally in community moving forward.
It Sends Them Home Differently
Here's what we care about most at Enhance Ministries: not the week itself, but what comes after it.
While we pray and will work hard towards Kingdom impact through practical needs being met and the Gospel advancing on our week together, the ultimate goal of a great mission trip goes far beyond just the week participants are away from home. The goal is students who goes back to their schools, their families, and their neighborhoods with new eyes, who have learned what it means to live on mission and who are now eager to live that way in every sphere of their real, regular lives.
Students who have served in a city come home and start seeing their own city differently. They notice the people they used to drive past. They ask better questions about injustice, about need, about the Church's role in the world around it. They carry a quiet awareness of human need and a growing sense that they are not just spectators to God's work but participants with Him in it.
That posture going through life as a co-laborer with Christ in God's mission rather than simply a consumer of religious services is one of the most important things a youth ministry can cultivate in a student.
A week in the Twin Cities or Chicago can plant that.
"In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16 (NIV)
The light Jesus is talking about doesn't shine from a safe distance. It shines in proximity to need, to people, to the full complexity of the world God so deeply loves.
What This Means for Your Church
If you're a youth pastor or church leader reading this, here's what we'd say:
You already know your students need this. You've watched them go through the motions of faith for years and wondered what would actually make it real for them. You've seen what happens when a student comes back from a trip and you've wished more of your students had that experience.
So do something about it!
